Especially in winter, huge series of waves break into tubes upon reaching the shallows of the reef. This popular area, across the street from Sunset Beach Elementary School, has limited parking. Hawaii was first settled by Polynesians in several waves from about 300-1000 AD. Although surfing was first described in writing by Europeans visiting Hawaii in 1769 and 1779, the riding of waves with a wooden board likely originated in Western Polynesia thousands of years earlier.
