The highest summit of the Wallowa Mountains—Sacagawea Peak (9843 ft, white summit on the right)—reflects in Ice Lake at sunrise, in Eagle Cap Wilderness, Wallowa–Whitman National Forest, in the Columbia Plateau of northeastern Oregon, USA. The white peak near center is the Matterhorn (9,826 ft), second highest of the Wallowas. Both peaks contain a motley mix of limestone (fossilized reef) and volcanic rocks of the Martin Bridge Formation. From Wallowa Lake Trailhead, I hiked 7.7 miles one way with 3200 feet gain to Ice Lake plus 3.7 miles round trip with 2000 feet ascent and descent to Matterhorn Peak in the Wallowa Mountains. I tented overnight at Ice Lake before returning 7.7 miles to the trailhead.
