50 imagesBugaboo Provincial Park lies in the Purcell Mountain Range south of Golden, British Columbia. In late September, Bugaboo Park is lightly visited and has the best fall colors for the forest of tamarack larch with deciduous yellow needles. Most tourists are attracted by nearby Canadian Rockies parks along fast paved highways and skip gravel logging roads, thereby leaving the spectacular "Bugaboos" as a quiet retreat for hikers, climbers, and luxury CMH helicopter guests. Hike to Conrad Kain Hut 2400 feet vertically in 3 miles for breathtaking views of nearby Bugaboo Glacier, soaring granite spires, and sedimentary Rocky Mountains across the valley. Day hike or stay overnight with convenient shelter in Kain Hut, which for a fee provides propane stoves and space for a sleeping bag. Directions: From Spillimacheen or Brisco (44 km north of Invermere on Hwy 95), follow signs to Bugaboo Provincial Park and CMH Lodge on a gravel logging road. After 47 kms (1.5 hours drive), turn right on a rougher road to reach Cobalt Lake trail head and Kain Hut trail head, or continue straight along Bugaboo Forest Service Road. Before you reach the gate of luxury CMH Bugaboo Lodge, a left turn crosses Bugaboo Creek bridge: then a left reaches Bugaboo Septet Recreation Site (4 primitive campsites in a free, user-maintained campground reachable by 2WD vehicles) or straight up takes 4WD vehicles and hikers to Chalice Creek trailhead.

32 imagesBelow are Tom Dempsey's images from an RV camping trip in October 2014 into eastern Canada to see sights along the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick: Hopewell Rocks sunrise, extreme tides, St Martins, and Fundy Trail Parkway. Bay of Fundy has the highest tidal range in the world, due to a resonance of being just the right length (270 km) matching the gravitational pushing cycle of the Moon that causes the tides. Coincidentally, the time it takes a large wave to go from the mouth of the bay to the inner shore and back is practically the same as the time from one high tide to the next. (You can see the effect of resonance for yourself by steadily pushing a long pan of water back and forth: an optimal pushing frequency for a given pan length will build up a high wave of water which sloshes out; but pushing too fast or too slow won't build up the big wave.) Two high tides occur per day, one when the ocean side is nearest the Moon, and one on the side of the Earth most distant from the Moon, about 12 hours and 25 minutes from one high tide to the next. The Bay of Fundy is on the Atlantic coast of North America, on the northeast end of the Gulf of Maine between the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. St. Martins (2006 population: 386) is 40 km east of Saint John. St. Martins (originally known as Quaco) was founded by Loyalists in 1783. Its important 1800s shipbuilding center faded, leaving tourism as today's major industry.

11 imagesThe town of Niagara Falls in Ontario, Canada, gives excellent views of all three sections of Niagara Falls, which drops 167 feet (51 m). Niagara Falls has the highest flow rate of any waterfall in the world. Niagara Falls is the name for the combined flow of Horseshoe Falls, American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, on the Niagara River along the international border between Ontario, Canada and New York, USA. The Niagara River drains Lake Erie into Lake Ontario. Horseshoe Falls is the most powerful waterfall in North America, as measured by vertical height combined with flow rate. The falls are 17 miles north-northwest of Buffalo, New York and 75 miles south-southeast of Toronto.
